Fire Detection / Life Safety

A fire alarm system is a cornerstone in the protection of people and property. The level of protection is mandated by the building and occupancy type. It can range from no protection to manual alarm, smoke, heat and waterflow detection with audible and visual notification with Central Station monitoring.

Applicable codes are written by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and are interpreted and enforced by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Other building codes e.g. Unified Building Code (UBC) may also apply.

Design of fire alarm systems is the responsibility of staff with National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) qualifications. Staff qualified at certain NICET levels, which may include a Professional Engineer (PE), may be required by the AHJ to approve fire alarm system drawings and documentation.
